The Papillon technique is a type of contact radiotherapy developed for treatment of rectal cancer. This groundbreaking treatment is important because, for certain types of rectal cancer, especially those in the early stages, it means surgery can be avoided. This is especially important for those patients who are not suitable or keen on extirpative surgery. For those patients who are able to undertake the treatment, their subsequent quality of life is much better as patients will not require a stoma bag.

 

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre was the first British centre to introduce Papillon contact radiotherapy in 1993. Since then The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre has been at the forefront of the development of this treatment, as well as leading training sessions to clinicians across the world.

In September 2013, the first designated Papillon treatment suite was opened in the UK at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Wirral, Merseyside.
