Almost 80 patients and family attended the annual ‘Papillon and patient support’ (PAPS) meeting last week in Wirral, Merseyside.

 

Now in its fifth year this popular event brings together current and past Papillon patients to hear about the rapid progress of the treatment option and meet with other patients and their families.

‘Papillon’ is a contact radiotherapy technique for early stage bowel cancer. Professor Arthur Sun Myint from The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre pioneered the treatment in the UK in 1993. To mark the 20-year-anniversary, the ground breaking radiotherapy treatment now has a dedicated Papillon Suite at the Wirral cancer centre.

The evening was the perfect opportunity for Professor Myint to share with the group that two new centres in Guildford and Nottingham hospitals will soon be ready to start treating patients with the Papillon technique.

Congratulations were shared with Sue Davies, Lead Volunteer for the PAPS telephone ‘buddying’ service. Sue was presented with the ‘Richard Hambro’ award by Macmillan for her work with the support group.

The meeting concluded with dinner and further discussions, and the opportunity for a guided tour of the newly opened Papillon Suite.
